Gallery Crawl

As a resident of downtown Pittsburgh, I’m always looking for things to do within the downtown area. You’d think since we are literally in the middle of the city things are always open, right? WRONG. Apart from restaurants, you can usually call it lights out by 6 p.m. The Pittsburgh Culturual Trust must have felt this black out and started their annual Gallery Crawls!

Last September I went to my first Gallery Crawl (there are several each year, ‘like’ Pittsburgh Cultural Trust on Facebook for future reference) with a few of my friends and had the best time. We looked at art, enjoyed a comedy show, shopped around the market and went head-to-head with a couple of guys in life-size CONNECT-FOUR (naturally, we were the champions.) Very cool, very low-key, very fun!

This seasons Gallery Crawl is this Friday, January 23rd from 5:30-10 p.m. I picked out a couple of events to check out; I’ll be there and hope you will be too!

Winter Night Market // 925 Liberty Avenue

Bend Yoga // 808 Penn Avenue

Arcade Comedy Theater // 811 Liberty Avenue

SPACE: Obsessions // 812 Liberty Avenue

Girl Scouts with a Twist

I feel it is my duty as a former Girl Scout to inform everyone it is COOKIE SEASON!! Adorable pig-tailed little girls will soon come knocking on your doors asking you to buy a box of their delicious cookies and although your new years resolution was to “eat healthy”, you’ll order thin mints and eat an entire sleeve in one sitting. We’ve all been there (just me? okay.) Enjoy this photo of yours truly rocking those pigtails while dressed like a giant Tagalong. Soak it in.

Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania is partnering up with local brewer Wigle Whiskey to take our cookie obsession to the next age-appropriate level! On Friday, February 20th, local bartenders from some of the best places to dine in the city are serving up one-of-a kind Girl Scout cookies cocktails! Can you dream of anything better?!

Bartenders from Tender Bar + Kitchen, Harvard and Highland, The Porch at Schenley, BRGR Cranberry and Pgh Taco Truck will be shaking up tasty drink versions of our favorite cookies. The mixer of the best craft cocktail will win the coveted Cookie Crown! Each ticket includes entry from 6-9 p.m., cocktail/cookie pairing from each bartender and fun music! Get the old troop back together for some sweet tasting treats and a walk down memory lane. Camping trips, weekly meetings, father daughter dinners….the memories!! Tickets are available now here!

Strip District Music Fest

Music Festivals such as Coachella, Firefly and SXSW are some of the most popular festivals known to the public. Festivals provide an all-day, sometimes even multiple day, experience filled with different artists, performances and collaborations. The atmosphere is AWESOME, quite frankly. Pittsburgh’s music scene is already great with an the annual Thrival Festival put on by Thrill Mill, but we’re always looking to grow! With the help of The Pittsburgh City Paper and Pabst Blue Ribbon, we are taking another leap!

This Saturday, January 17th, Pittsburgh is hosting Strip District Music Fest, an all day festival hosting over 70 musicians at 11 venues in the Strip District! There will be art vendors, food trucks and you pay what you want! It’s pretty sick to see so much local talent coming together. There are also tons of delicious restaurants in the Strip District including Osteria 2350 and SAVOY, both featuring special menus for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week happening till Sunday!

You can check out a soundcloud featuring some of the bands playing on the events website. A full line-up is below.

Having donations based events are cool because lots of people are able to come, but make sure to give if you can! Bands participating have been working hard to promote themselves and put on a great show! Support local music!
